Limestone, is widely used as a construction material in its own right
and as a component for products such as coated roadstone, ready mixed concrete
and pre-cast concrete products. Lime is widely used in mortars as it ensures
superior workability and less wastage. From an engineering perspective. lime mortars
display greater durability and enhanced compressive and flexural strength. In
addition , their ability to react with water provides a self - healing capability.
In addition to mortars for brick and block laying, lime may also be incorporated
into plasters, renders and paving mortars. Lime is also used in the manufacture
of lightweight thermal concrete bricks. These blocks are not only light but strong,
due to their cellular structure created in manufacture from the presence of a
lime based alkaline slurry. Calcium silicate bricks, often referred to as sand
lime bricks have been manufactured since the 19th Century and still enjoy widespread
use due to a high compression strength.
