Clean, safe drinking water is vital to us all and plays a major influence
in ensuring the availability of this essential element. Lime is used in varying
forms to achieve specific requirements; where water is too acid, lime as an alkaline
agent adjusts the pH value: the addition of milk in lime and flocculants removes
and dissolves suspended impurities which then settle as a sludge. As a sterilising
agent lime, destroys bacteria and germs and aids the precipitation of toxic elements
such as nitrates, phosphates and heavy metals as insoluble calcium salts.
